NOT JUST WATCH. DYEING PLANTS IN THE CHIERESE TEXTILE
STUDY DAY ON TEXTILE AND NATURE
BANDERA EMBROIDERY WORKSHOP
CONFERENCES AND INAUGURAL VISIT TO THE TEXTILE BOTANICAL GARDEN
Saturday 10 September 2022
In view of the celebrations of the Madonna delle Grazie, Patroness of the City of Chieri, the Foundation is re-proposing the study day on the union between textiles and nature, this year entitled “Not only gualdo. Dyeing plants in Chieri textiles” since various botanical species will be treated which are of particular importance in the context of reference.
From the morning, he will take part in this particular day Anna Ghigo , President of the Friends of Bandera Embroidery Association , which will hold two limited-number workshops in which participants will embroider their initials by performing the traditional stitches of "needle painting" using yarns dyed with henna and madder roots from the Textile Botanical Gardens.
Starting at 15.00, in the "Porta del Tessile" room, they will be speaking in conferences Julia Perin , artist in residence and expert in Batik and oriental dyeing techniques, Magda Massaglia , botanist former collaborator of the Savigliano Perfume Museum, e
Mitti Baiotti , expert guide of the Textile Museum. Furthermore, a speech, in French, by Lise Camoin , textile designer and founder of Couleur Garance in Lauris.
At 17.15, a guided tour of the Textile Botanical Garden will follow, located in what was once the cloister of the convent of Santa Chiara, with a fifteenth-century layout, transformed at the beginning of the nineteenth century into the first modern factory in Chieri. Since the late Middle Ages, however, Chieri was an important center of textile production and trade and for centuries its fortunes were linked to the spinning of hemp, flax, cotton and other natural fibers, to weaving, to "whitening" and also to the dyeing of fabrics – moleskin primarily .
Melanie ZEFFERINO, President of the Foundation explains: «The first of its kind in Piedmont, the Textile Botanical Garden is intended as hortus of beauty, which integrates the book heritage of the Foundation's specialist library and is grafted onto the exhibition itinerary of the Chieri Textile Museum. During the long period of restrictions imposed by the pandemic, we have better understood its value and potential in experiential, cognitive and cultural terms. Created in 2017 based on a project by Clara Bertolini and Manuel Ramello, this particular garden is a space in which the link between textiles and nature is rediscovered as well as the value of creative and sustainable making».
This year, the Textile Garden has been enriched with some rare species and has been renewed along the way to improve their accessibility through information sheets with targeted synthetic texts, the scientific name of each species also in Braille and QR codes for reference to content audio, so as to involve a wider audience with different abilities. The new poster design of the Orto del Tessile, with texts by Melanie Zefferino and Laura Vaschetti, was created and installed by
Claudio Zucca
and financed thanks to the support of the Piedmont Region, which has included the Foundation among the cultural institutions of regional importance for the three-year period 2021-2023.
